Horizontal Division of the Face

DIVISION OF THE FACE ACCORDING TO THE THREE MODES OF MATERIAL NATURE
The face is also divided horizontally into three regions, i.e. the upper zone, the middle zone, and the lower zone. This division is according to the three modes of material nature. Let’s have a detailed discussion about the horizontal division of the face according to these three modes of material nature in terms of Vedic face reading.
According to the Vedas, people are divided into the three modes of material nature according to their karma, which is based on their actions in past lives. These three divisions are clearly reflected in the face when it is divided horizontally into three parts. The upper part of the face comprises the upper tip of the forehead to the eyebrows. The middle part of the face constitutes the area below the eyebrows till the nose and the lower part of
the face constitutes the area below the nose to the chin.
The upper zone, also known as the celestial zone represents the mode of goodness. The middle zone represents the mode of passion, and the lower zone represents the mode of ignorance. Through face reading, we can generally find out whether a person is in the mode of goodness, passion, or ignorance. If the upper part of the face is longer than the middle, or the lower parts, then the person is situated in the mode of goodness. If the middle part of the face is longer than the upper and the lower parts, then the person is in the mode of passion, and if the lower part is the longest as compared to the other two parts then the person is situated in the mode of ignorance. However, sometimes we see that all three parts of the face are equal, in that case, the person has combined traits of all the three modes. If any part of the face is longer than the other parts, then it should be concluded that the person is predominantly ruled by that mode of material nature.
Let us discuss the traits of all three modes of material nature.

  1. The Upper Zone, or the Celestial Zone (Mode of Goodness) If the upper part of the face, i.e. the forehead, is longer than the middle and lower parts then the person is situated in the mode of goodness. As per the Vedas, people situated in the mode of goodness are purer than others, because this mode is illuminating and frees one from all sinful reactions. People situated in the mode of goodness are conditioned by a sense of happiness. They work on a mental and intellectual plane. These people are not affected by material miseries a lot and have a sense of advancement in material and spiritual knowledge. These people generally become writers, philosophers, poets, and scientists, or are involved in any field that is related to the mental advancement of a person. The representative types in the mode of goodness as per the Vedas, are the Brahmans in India, who are generally involved in intellectual advancement. These people are generally illuminated by knowledge. People in this category usually follow a healthy diet, free from animal fats, and intoxicants. A person who works in the mode of goodness throughout his/her life, and dies in this mode, attain higher heavenly planets like Heaven.
  2. The Middle Zone (Mode of Passion)
People are said to belong to the mode of passion if the middle part of the face is longer than the other two parts. People born in this mode are born with unlimited desires and longings and because of this, whatever they do, their sole purpose is profitable returns, or the desire to have the fruits of their actions. Hence, they are bound to material actions that will profit them in some way. People situated in the mode of passion work on a physical plane. They also live with the bodily conception of life. The person in the mode of passion is never satisfied with the position he/she has already acquired. They eternally hanker to increase their position, power, and bank balance. If a person works in the mode of passion throughout his/her life and dies in the mode of passion, then he/she takes birth again on earth among people who are eternally engaged and struggling in material activities The results of actions in the mode of passion are misery, fear, and anxiety. People in this mode are attracted to a diet that stimulates and which is harsh upon the body.
  3. The Lower Zone (Mode of Ignorance)
In this case, the lower zone of the face is the longest, so these people are situated in the mode of ignorance. They madly hanker after sensual gratification in this world without thinking about morality. These people are not even acting like the people controlled by the mode of passion, and want everything with minimum effort. Under the spell of ignorance, these people cannot understand things correctly. They are generally not interested in any kind of spiritual understanding. They want to sleep ten to twelve hours a day, or even more, and are addicted to intoxicants. In the mode of ignorance whatever a person does, is neither good for him, nor for others. So the consequences of their activities are good for no one. The results of their activities are usually foolishness, anxiety, tension, and loss of reason. A person who works in the mode of ignorance throughout his/her life, will fall down after death and take birth in the animal kingdom. People in this mode are generally attracted to professions that revolve around sex, intoxicants, gambling, and other anti-social and immoral activities. The work of those in this category is related to performance without knowledge. People who are actually serious in this human life generally aspire to reach the mode of goodness with the association of a bona fide spiritual master and transcend the modes of passion and ignorance.
